Students write in the weeks leading up to Valentine’s Day and compete to see who can write the best ‘worst Valentine’s Day ever.’ This is a creative twist on other writing ideas, and students are excited to try their hand at writing a Not-So-Happy Valentine’s.
Lesson plans include ideas to front-load vocabulary and ideas so that reluctant writers immediately feel successful because before they begin writing, they already have a hefty word list and idea list.
This Valentine’s Day writing prompt easily fits within the writing workshop model. With an included writing process checklist, the student is guided through each step of the writing process, from the pre-writing/brainstorming sessions to publishing a finished piece.
A scoring rubric is included for the teacher if needed.
Also included are a Valentine’s Day-themed cover sheet, a Dedication page, an About the Author page, a Comments Page, and a blank writing page that has room for both text and drawings. Teachers can add to their Writer’s Center so students can publish their themed pieces and create a picture book.
