Writing Summer Poetry – A Seasonal Poetry Resource for Upper Elementary

Looking for an engaging way to bring the summer season into your writing block?
Want to help your students explore poetry in a fun, approachable way—especially your reluctant or struggling writers? I’ve got you covered.

This easy-to-use Summer Poetry resource includes everything you need to guide your students through four different types of poetry: Acrostic, Couplet, Concrete, and Free Verse. Each poem type comes with a student-friendly teaching page and original example, giving your writers structure, support, and a spark of inspiration.

Kick off the unit with a visualizing poetry lesson using Paul Laurence Dunbar’s Summer in the South—a beautiful way to help students picture poetry in their minds before they begin writing their own. Then, guide them step-by-step through each form, collecting final copies along the way to create a polished Summer Poetry Collection.

From brainstorming to publishing, this resource is built to be flexible, supportive, and meaningful—without adding to your plate. Includes checklists and rubrics to keep students on track and make grading simple. Themed publishing pages give students a chance to showcase their work and take pride in their writing.
